Launching an ambitious donor collaborative to end child marriage

Opportunity

  • A group of leading philanthropic institutions wanted to fill a critical funding gap to community-based organizations to help end child marriage.
  • The partners wanted to leverage their collective investments and create a way for other donors to join their efforts through a pooled philanthropic fund.

Approach

  • Established the Girls First Fund as a philanthropic fund within Capital for Good USA, a U.S. 501(c)(3) public charity, instead of creating a new nonprofit entity.
  • Facilitated strategy workshops to drive key conversations and gain consensus among the eight founding partners, leading to the development of the fund’s goals, objectives, vision, mission, and values.
  • Spearheaded the fund’s messaging and branding and developed print and digital materials for its official launch.
  • Ensured a smooth fund startup by supporting the hiring of its director and program advisors as well as managing the collaborative’s financials.
  • Collaborated with the board committee to develop the fund’s theory of change and learning framework.

Results

  • Created and supported a smoothly running fund that committed $11.4 million dollars to 176 active grantee partners, 85% of which are women- and girl-led organizations.
  • Enabled the fund to grow and develop by handing off day-to-day staffing and program management to the Girls First Fund management team, pivoting the relationship to one of a fiscally sponsored project of Capital for Good in January of 2022.
  • Prioritized capacity building and eventual autonomy as strategic objectives from the outset.
